Collection: OTHERNESS
Otherness is as in progress series exploring themes of identity, power, perception, acceptance and belonging. Following on from the previous investigative series I am Patchwork - here the artist investigates what it means to be Other and Otherness- whilst undertaking her own Hero’s Journey.
Through the Otherness series the artist is currently investigating the following questions:
- Does ‘fitting in’ lead to belonging? And can we still belong, even if we don’t fit in?
- How do other people perspectives of ourselves impact our daily lives and our civic and legal rights? And should that perception have so much power that it actually impacts another?
- What value does a human life have? And how is that worth measured and calculated?
- How can human contribution be measured? And who or what has the power to make that valuation?
- How much power should one human being ever be able to exercise upon another? And what limits do we impose as a society over that ‘power over’?
- Is the idea of a ‘tribe’ conducive or destructive to society as a whole? And does it bring us closer together or further apart?
- Is it better to speak or to die?
